Welcome

“Yoga is like music. The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind
and the harmony of the soul, create the symphony of life.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

Yogazentrum

The Yogazentrum Akazienhof  was established in September 2003 focussing its attention on Hatha Yoga in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar. Ten qualified male and female teachers offer a wide selection of Yoga classes catering to different skill levels as well as unique target groups. The classes are open to all interested persons, regardless of their level of experience. In addition the center offers classes for children,  people over the age of 55 and yoga for big people.

Instead of placing emphasis on the spiritual aspects of Yoga we teach a more western oriented, dynamic and vigorous style demanding so much concentration on the moment that the benefits of a deep, mental and physical relaxation can be enjoyed at the end of a class.

Team

“The body ist the temple of the spirit.
Let the temple be clean through Yoga.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

Nine qualified Yoga teachers, mainly influenced by B.K.S. Iyengar, instruct at the Yogazentrum Akazienhof.

Precision as well as the defined execution of the positions (Asanas) and the correction of each student are at the forefront of this physically oriented style of Hatha Yoga. We want to make the principles of correct posture, movement and grounding so intelligible that they may also take root in everyday life. This is the only way the awareness and understanding for one’s own body can deepen. At the same time the instructions support the development of strength and endurance as well as mobility, co-ordination and concentration. The powerful and dynamic classes close with a relaxation phase, which allows for a deep letting go of body and mind.

Renate Ockel

Psychologist. Iyengar®-yogateachers' certificate at the "Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco", USA in 1988. Teaches since 1988 in Berlin Schöneberg and operates the yogazentrum akazienhof.

"For me Yoga is a valuable instrument to strengthen the inner foundation in order to allow as many different facets of life as possible to express themselves within. Old wounds, physical or psychological, can come to the surface, can heal and create the foundation for new positive experiences".

Ute Aurand

Filmmaker. Ute has been practising Yoga with Renate Ockel since 1991 and acquired her Yoga teacher certificate from Vinod Dulal in India in 2001.

"For me the nicest part of this Yoga style is the concentration and alertness, combined with the physical challenge; the smallest physical processes can trigger significant psychological effects. The perceiving and observing of this internal process opens a deeper understanding of oneself and sometimes this results in a feeling of joy. This then is one benefit for our efforts and here it doesn't really matter how  good we are"

Helen Barsby

Musician. Has been practising yoga since 1993 and was trained and certified by the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Amsterdam in 2003. She has been instructing Yoga since 2001 and has taken further training in Europe and at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in India.

"As a student of music I discovered Yoga while looking to solve physical issues, and to find a practice and art to help me enhance my performance. Yoga offers a fascinating practice in the integration of the body with the mind and spirit. The benefits to mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing are invaluable, in my teaching I hope to impart this special practice. Yoga brings back balance, and every time I am on the mat I am grateful for these tools of life."
Iyengar Yoga has always been good for my back, where during puberty a strong scoliosis had appeared. However it was during my first time in Pune at the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute in 2006, that I was to feel the immense benefits and astounding change possible, thanks to an intense and personal training in the medical classes there. Since then I practice with more self reflection, and can live with much more balance with my scoliosis.

Susanne Berg

Social educator. Has been practising Yoga with Renate Ockel since 1996, became a certified Yoga teacher for children in 2002.

"My professional experience and that with my two daughters has shown me the extent to which children and youth are at risk of losing contact to their bodies. To me it seems that playful Yoga can be an ideal means to achieve greater mobility, muscle tone and improved body awareness.

Josef Foos

Non-medical practitioner. Josef as been practising Yoga since 1988 and has been teaching since 1990. Further training with different teachers in the Iyengar genre.

"Yoga does not only change the body but also the bio-chemistry and with that one's emotional life and thinking. The proverbial calmness is a reflection of this."
For me the practice of Yoga is as a visit to a beautiful island. Getting there is a challenge but once arrived I can tune out, relax and charge my batteries. This enables me to better deal with life's daily challenges and permits me to try new things."

"For years I have been benefiting from the effects of Yoga in the form of stable health, increased energy, greater harmony and physical well-being. Although well over 50, this motivated me to enhance my life experience with the certification as a Yoga teacher. I would like to provide an access to Yoga for other older people so that they can make contact with still hidden potentials."

Reinhold Halter

Merchant. Yoga practitioner since 1992, studying the Iyengar Yoga tradition with Renate Ockel and Stefanie Roth since 2004. Trained and certified in 2014 by the " Iyengar Yoga Association of Germany" .

"Yoga is a tool I use in my daily practice to balance and strenghten myself. The associated deep concentration changes my habitual ways of thinking and feeling and sharpens my awareness to more clarity and conciousness. I am more balanced and ready to deal with the challenges of life in a better way. As a basis for more inner balance I'ld like to convey deeper access towards the body in my classes."

Michael Klüsener

Bookseller, Yoga practitioner since 1996, in 2005 completion of a 4-year teacher training with BDY. Further studies with Richard Müller and Renate Ockel in the Iyengar®-Yoga method.

"The wonder of Yoga for me is the way it enables me to tap my own energy source, awaken strength and focus on what matters most in life. Through Yoga I can find release from my conditioning and self-imposed limitations and realise my own inner strength. Each day of Yoga practise brings me closer towards my dream of a self-determined life, and shows me the way forwards. An important part of my Yoga practise is teaching, which enables me to share this valuable experience. "

Besides Yogaclasses I also offer a Meditationclass every Saturday from 6-7.30pm (donation).

Gabi Lutterbeck

Documentation journalist and artist. In 1996 Gabi began her Yoga teacher training at the B.K.S. Iyengar Institute of Los Angeles and studied with Manouso Manos, John Schumacher and Marla Apt. Since 2002 she is a student of Renate Ockel.

"I enjoy the precise and harmonic poses in Iyengar Yoga and I would like to transfer this enthusiasm to my students. In my classes you will learn greater awareness of yourself and your body. Those who practice regularly continue to recognise new levels of their selves and their bodies. This new strength and flexibility - this alert awareness - helps us to master our everyday routine in a more relaxed manner."

Classes

“Words fail to convey the total value of Yoga.
It has to be experienced.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

The aim of Yoga is to become more aware of oneself and to find a way to inner peace, harmony and a sense of unity. In order to come closer to such a state it has been determined that especially in the West it is more meaningful to initially bring the body to the centre of attention. The mind needs a focus and feelings need a concrete point of reference which they can refer to.

In this context the physical positions (asanas) in Yoga, which we instruct in the classes, fulfill different objectives. For one they keep the body healthy and fit, but because of their complexity they require so much concentration to be carried out correctly, that there is no time for distracting thoughts. This implicit concentration on the moment has a very relaxing effect on the mind. At the same time the body is challenged at the appropriate level to expand its abilities and possibilities at every age.

For such experiences the Yogazentrum Akazienhof offers a variety of classes at different levels. In the beginner classes basic aspects of the Yoga asanas are taught and expanded on in future classes. In the intermediate and advanced level classes more complex asanas are added, positions are held longer and the work becomes more differentiated as body awareness matures. In the background there is always the goal to improve the ability to concentrate, thereby allowing for deeper levels of relaxation.

We also offer yoga for kids and a course for people over 55 as well as a course for big people, which cater more to the specific needs of these age groups.

Info for beginners

Yoga for kids

Surprisingly quickly kids’ development can lead from the first happy steps and true passion for movement to reluctance towards physical activity and the resulting bad posture associated with the sitting school kid sitting at a desk or the regular TV watcher. Already at school it is evident how many kids and youth have distanced themselves from their bodies and how difficult they find it to constructively deal with overstimulation. more >>>

Yoga for big people

Many people with a weight problem don’t feel good about themselves because the extra pounds impede their body awareness and thus their awareness of themselves. They are frustrated with the constant barage of ‘new’ diets promising miracles which call for a lot of discipline, often cost a lot of money and in the end are not very helpful. After such diets many people are disappointed about themselves and the weight problem remains. more >>>

Yoga over 55

Experience shows that physical vitality declines after a certain age. It becomes harder to climb stairs or bend over, carrying things becomes more difficult, flexibility decreases, joints become stiffer, vitality deminishes, the little aches and pains increase in number and there is more pain. more >>>

Yoga Courses

“Your body is your child – look after it.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

In order for you to get to know our centre and Yoga in general we regularly conduct an open house with short presentations and free classes. On this day all interested persons are welcome to our centre to look around and inform themselves.

Besides regular classes we also offer special events which are open to all Yoga practitioners. On Yoga Saturdays, certain topics are dealt with in theory and practice in order to provide a deeper understanding of Yoga.

In 2016 we also invite guest teachers who can act as an inspiration for our centre and all participants. What is more, with their own style of teaching they often bring new facets of understanding and experiencing for us to marvel at.

A great way to intensify your experience with Yoga is to take part in one of the week-long retreats. This is a great opportunity to practise Yoga for several hours each day with other like-minded people in beautiful surroundings. This daily exchange with our bodies allows us to learn a lot and afterwards these weeks contribute to a sense of community among other ‘Yogis’ in Berlin.

Yoga

“Health is not a commodity to be bargained for.
It has to be earned with sweat and toil”
B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga in the West

The general image of Yoga is based on very common clichés. Relaxation, the singing of Ohm, meditation and enlightenment while sitting in the lotus position with soft sounds and the smell of incense in the background are the first images that come up in most people when asked about Yoga. When it comes to physical exercises the head balance and lotus as well as the idea of tying your body into knots rounds out the picture. more >>>

Vision

As a psychologist I searched for a method to include the body as an equal world of experience into the understanding and changing of psychological processes.

I am convinced that intense emotional experiences are imprinted on the body from earliest childhood on, that they strengthen some parts of the body and weaken or even deform others. more >>>
