Welcome

“Yoga is like music. The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind
and the harmony of the soul, create the symphony of life.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

Yogazentrum

From October 1, 2003 to March 1, 2021, the Yogazentrum Akazienhof on Akazienstraße in Berlin Schöneberg was a well established  mainstay. Unfortunately, it had to close, because the long term lease contract expired.

We would like to thank all those who have found their way to our center over the years, many of whom stayed for many years. Without you and your interest in yoga, we would not have been able to sustain this center for so long. We will remain present on this website for a while, until live classes will resume under normal conditions.

To remember the center, there is a very nice little film shot by Ute Aurand.

An article in the Tagesspiegel newspaper local section Schöneberg from March 3, 2021, depicting the history of the yoga center, can be accessed here:

News

The Yoga center closed permanently on March 1, 2021.

To those interested we are offering some of our classes online. These will be conducted in real time with the yoga teacher and participants, via a video conference software. This isn’t all that difficult and can be more fun than you thought! In a few steps we will show you how this is done and what you have to watch out for – and then nothing stands in the way of your participation.

Team

“The body ist the temple of the spirit.
Let the temple be clean through Yoga.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

Five qualified Yoga teachers, mainly influenced by B.K.S. Iyengar, instruct at the Yogazentrum Akazienhof.

Precision as well as the defined execution of the positions (Asanas) and the correction of each student are at the forefront of this physically oriented style of Hatha Yoga. We want to make the principles of correct posture, movement and grounding so intelligible that they may also take root in everyday life. This is the only way the awareness and understanding for one’s own body can deepen. At the same time the instructions support the development of strength and endurance as well as mobility, co-ordination and concentration. The powerful and dynamic classes close with a relaxation phase, which allows for a deep letting go of body and mind.

Renate Ockel

Psychologist. Iyengar®-yogateachers' certificate at the "Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco", USA in 1988. Teaches since 1988 in Berlin Schöneberg and operates the yogazentrum akazienhof.

"For me Yoga is a valuable instrument to strengthen the inner foundation in order to allow as many different facets of life as possible to express themselves within. Old wounds, physical or psychological, can come to the surface, can heal and create the foundation for new positive experiences".

Ute Aurand

Filmmaker. Ute has been practising Yoga with Renate Ockel since 1991 and acquired her Yoga teacher certificate from Vinod Dulal in India in 2001.

"What I like best about this kind of yoga is the concentration and alertness it brings through physical activity. This perception and observation of the inner processes makes for a deeper understanding of oneself and sometimes this is a pleasure. This is the gift; and it doesn't matter how good we are. In recent years I've evolved toward a softer practice where the natural breath receives more consideration".

Helen Barsby

Musician. Has been practising yoga since 1993 and was trained and certified by the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Amsterdam in 2003. She has been instructing Yoga since 2001 and has taken further training in Europe and at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in India.

"As a student of music I discovered Yoga while looking to solve physical issues, and to find a practice and art to help me enhance my performance. Yoga offers a fascinating practice in the integration of the body with the mind and spirit. The benefits to mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing are invaluable, in my teaching I hope to impart this special practice. Yoga brings back balance, and every time I am on the mat I am grateful for these tools of life."
Iyengar Yoga has always been good for my back, where during puberty a strong scoliosis had appeared. However it was during my first time in Pune at the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute in 2006, that I was to feel the immense benefits and astounding change possible, thanks to an intense and personal training in the medical classes there. Since then I practice with more self reflection, and can live with much more balance with my scoliosis.

Reinhold Halter

Merchant. Yoga practitioner since 1992, studying the Iyengar Yoga tradition with Renate Ockel and Stefanie Roth since 2004. Trained and certified in 2014 by the " Iyengar Yoga Association of Germany" .

"Yoga is a tool I use in my daily practice to balance and strenghten myself. The associated deep concentration changes my habitual ways of thinking and feeling and sharpens my awareness to more clarity and conciousness. I am more balanced and ready to deal with the challenges of life in a better way. As a basis for more inner balance I'ld like to convey deeper access towards the body in my classes."

Konstanze Herrmann

Landscape architect, yoga practitioner since 2005, trained and certified in 2016 by the Iyengar Yoga Association of Germany.

" As a person who loves movement, I've appreciated Iyengar Yoga for its precision, concentration and challenge from the beginning. Yoga requires strength and softness, develops dynamic movement but also stable balance and peace. It requires energy but also patient poise. The effects of yoga emanates on many planes and is a way for one to develop physically, mentally and emotionally. In this way yoga creates new connections to our own inner world, which also result in positive changes in our outer world. As a yoga teacher I would like to share such valuable experience with others.

Classes

“Words fail to convey the total value of Yoga.
It has to be experienced.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

The aim of Yoga is to become more aware of oneself and to find a way to inner peace, harmony and a sense of unity. In order to come closer to such a state it has been determined that especially in the West it is more meaningful to initially bring the body to the centre of attention. The mind needs a focus and feelings need a concrete point of reference which they can refer to.

In this context the physical positions (asanas) in Yoga, which we instruct in the classes, fulfill different objectives. For one they keep the body healthy and fit, but because of their complexity they require so much concentration to be carried out correctly, that there is no time for distracting thoughts. This implicit concentration on the moment has a very relaxing effect on the mind. At the same time the body is challenged at the appropriate level to expand its abilities and possibilities at every age.

For such experiences the Yogazentrum Akazienhof offers a variety of classes at different levels. In the beginner classes basic aspects of the Yoga asanas are taught and expanded on in future classes. In the intermediate and advanced level classes more complex asanas are added, positions are held longer and the work becomes more differentiated as body awareness matures. In the background there is always the goal to improve the ability to concentrate, thereby allowing for deeper levels of relaxation.

We also offer  Yoga for people over 55, which caters more to the specific needs of this age group.

Yoga Courses

“Your body is your child – look after it.”
B.K.S. Iyengar

Besides regular classes we also offer special events which are open to all Yoga practitioners. On Yoga Sundays, certain topics are dealt with in theory and practice in order to provide a deeper understanding of Yoga.

A great way to intensify your experience with Yoga is to take part in one of the week-long retreats. This is a great opportunity to practise Yoga for several hours each day with other like-minded people in beautiful surroundings. This daily exchange with our bodies allows us to learn a lot and afterwards these weeks contribute to a sense of community among other ‘Yogis’ in Berlin.

Yoga

“Health is not a commodity to be bargained for.
It has to be earned with sweat and toil”
B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga in the West

The general image of Yoga is based on very common clichés. Relaxation, the singing of Ohm, meditation and enlightenment while sitting in the lotus position with soft sounds and the smell of incense in the background are the first images that come up in most people when asked about Yoga. When it comes to physical exercises the head balance and lotus as well as the idea of tying your body into knots rounds out the picture. more >>>

Vision

As a psychologist I searched for a method to include the body as an equal world of experience into the understanding and changing of psychological processes. I am convinced that intense emotional experiences are imprinted on the body from earliest childhood on, that they strengthen some parts of the body and weaken or even deform others. more >>>
